“It’s More Fun in the Philippines” is the new slogan of the Department of Tourism launched last January 6, 2012. Mainly due to its similarity to the 1951 Swiss tourism slogan “It’s More Fun in Switzerland,” the phrase has since become a topic of captioned lampoons.
According to Phil Star, the Philippines Department of Tourism (DOT) Secretary publicly responded to the criticisms: “The line isn’t a manufactured slogan. It is simply the truth about our country. Don’t be swayed by people who are trying to punch holes in it… No one can own the expression ‘it’s more fun’ but it’s very true for the Philippines so it becomes ours.”
The question is . . .Is it really more fun here in the Philippines? To be honest, I am not certain how to react on this. I don’t know if I’m gonna feel diverted and satisfied with it or not. I can’t convince myself if I really appreciated it because basically I love the previous one: WOW Philippines! I can’t say that I hate it because I even joined in the contest posting picture showing that it’s really more fun in the Philippines. Thus, I even love to tell the people that it’s really more fun here. Another thing, a lot of people keep on doing the same, . . . posting on their walls in fb and tweeting a lot of stuffs and updates in the said campaign. I even monitored the in yahoo about the trend . . . in fact its trends last for almost a week. As a consequence, it’s a less budget spending by the government for endorsement of the campaign. Congratulations DOT!
If you will really think about the content of the ad and even go beyond it, you can deem that there’s really a negative connotation. It’s more fun in the Philippines . . . the word “more” is to blame about the negative connotation. If I am an American or Korean and you’ll gonna tell me that it’s more fun in your country than mine, I will surely tell you that it’s not. A lot of people really tend to be nationalistic in nature that’s why we can’t blame them if ever they will say the same.
On a brighter side, I can say that it’s more fun in the Philippines because the Filipinos are honest and friendly. Somehow, we may be considered as one of the poorest, but would give the shirt off their back to a complete stranger. In short, we are hospitable. The faith in God is innate to Filipinos. We do have great weather we have plus the beautiful beaches and warm welcoming faces of the Filipinos. We always smile and optimistic to face all the challenges in our life. We also have great talents that even singing is not a gift anymore but a hobby. That’s what we are!
I also want to mention in this bit some of our domestic tourism slogans: Boracay, You Sexy Beach! Maliit Navotas, Lumalaki! We Fly High In Capiz! Go Gaga In Naga! Kaibigan, Punta Na Sa Vigan! Virac, You Rock! Whee! Tawi-T awi! Walang Aayaw sa Apayao! Bongga Ka Day, Sa Norzagaray! Todong Todo sa Tondo! Haller, Baler! Bohol: Go To Hill! Hadang Hada sa Sagada! I wanna dance with Zambales, I wanna feel the heat with Zambales! Kamuning Get Me! Better Leyte Than Never! Maraming Gig Sa Taguig! Be Cool, Bicol! And the last but the cutest I think: Thank you, Camiguin! 🙂
To everyone who hasn’t been here, our country really is a beautiful one and you should take a break here for at least once in your life! There are so many fabulous places to see and you’ll never unearth friendlier nation anywhere else in our planet.
Its worth noting that we have set up a luminous ad campaign in “It’s More Fun”. Everybody is actually now taking their part. Its triumph lies not only in the hands our government but to one and all. Let us not try to always pick holes on it. Let us NOT tolerate the disreputable crabs to mess up its splendor and magnificence.
